For over 50 years, the Catholic Charities Appeal has been the primary source of private funds raised to assist Catholic Social Services in meeting the needs of the disadvantaged, the poor, and the most vulnerable members of our local communities. The 2012 Catholic Charities Appeal – Because I am Catholic – thus far has raised $6,014,532 from 40,150 donors, which represents nearly a $1 million increase over last year’s final total, with over 6,600 more donors participating than last year. The Appeal began in mid-February and continues through June, so there is still time to make your contribution, which enables Catholic Social Services to continue in its mission to provide help and create hope, reaching over 170,000 people last year. Go to the Catholic Charities Appeal website, and learn more about the Appeal and how you can contribute. |

In times of tight budgets such as these, government funds go to proven models and quality providers. No wonder that 10 Out of School Time programs run by Catholic Social Services were awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant through a competitive process conducted by the PA Dept. of Education. The grant provides $500,000 annually for three years, to promote improved academic achievement for over 400 students in challenged neighborhoods via afterschool programs located at Catholic parochial schools and Catholic Social Services sites. |

Catholic Social Services recently hosted individuals from across the region as dedicated volunteers at one of more than a dozen program sites in the agency. Some have been giving of their time and creativity for two or more decades, doing everything from organizing emergency food cupboards and tutoring children to serving meals or teaching art classes to seniors. Nearly 5,200 volunteers donated more than 64,000 hours of volunteer service during our last fiscal year alone. We are grateful to all of these wonderful people who are so generous in giving of themselves to help us further our mission of providing help and creating hope for those in need. |
