Don Guanella Village is named in memory of Saint Luigi Guanella, who is to be canonized on October 23, 2011. Don Guanella pioneered a program of support for boys and girls abandoned and rejected by society because of their physical and mental disabilities. He challenged the society of his time to accept individuals with intellectual disabilities as brothers and as blessings from God. Father Guanella established two religious congregations to carry out his work: the "Daughters of St. Mary of Providence" and the "Servants of Charity." In 1960, the Servants of Charity came to Don Guanella Village in Springfield, PA. The Daughters of St. Mary of Providence staffed Divine Providence Village from its founding in 1984 through 2004. The Servants of Charity continue to coordinate and offer the spiritual programming at Don Guanella Village and direct Mission Integration and Catholic Identity for the Developmental Programs division of Catholic Social Services.
